THE AMAZING BOY

He sits!

He stands!

He is the amazing Gus!

And yesterday he shocked the pants off of us when he climbed a step! A concrete step! (No picture of that - we were too busy getting him down and being amazed that he can apparently climb steps.)

These may be the cutest pajamas in all the land.

IMPRESSIONS

August's Barack Obama pose: Staring at the horizon, seen from below, vaguely totalitarian.

August's John McCain pose: Condescending smile.

IT'S TRUE, IT'S TRUE

Poppa shaved off his beard! Of course, by the time he got around to posing for a picture it had started to grow back.

SURLY & GUS

This is Surly:

He is a new puppy, and he belongs to our friends Kristen and Sean. Gus likes to play with Surly.

Coda is Kristen and Sean's other dog. He is very gentle, and lets Gus pull on his ears and climb on his back. Surly doesn't do those things yet, because he's just a puppy.

We like to visit with Surly and Coda!

ANOTHER FIRST

We finally hooked the baby seat onto the back of my bicycle and took the little guy for a ride. We had to wait for a pretty warm day. Last weekend, we got our wish.

We took him over to the Greenway high bridge over Hiawatha.

We thought he'd be excited about biking, but his initial reaction was pretty mediocre. At least he likes it better than the car! Hopefully we'll get another ride in before it gets too cold. Then, next spring - this is how we'll be getting around!

Doesn't he look delighted?

RAKING (AND EATING) LEAVES

Last weekend, August helped us rake the leaves.

He mostly helped by crawling off his blanket and trying to eat as many as possible,

but it was fun nonetheless.

SWIMMING

Gus and I went swimming today.

He met a new friend:

He played in the fountains:

And he accidentally crawled through one (you can hear him protest when he gets to the other side.)

7 MONTHS

Our home network is still down, so we popped into the library to bring you this quick post. Little August is 7 months, and growing fast! We'll be posting more photos as soon as things are back up and running.

THINGS TO CHEW ON

August, like most babies, likes to chew on things. Some things are okay to chew on.

The ball:

The blood pressure cuff from his toy medical kit:

The blue mouse:

His bib:

The monkey rattle:

Some things are not okay to chew on.

Leaves:

The dog's bone:

And records:

It's always the things that we don't want covered in baby spit the he likes chewing on the most. Let's hope this next tooth comes in soon - teething is hard!

GUS AND HIS BOWL

Photo by Craig, more photos here. He took some really great ones of the little guy (and his bowl).

HE CRAWLS, HE STANDS

We're moving in leaps and bounds. Last week - he figured out crawling - for real this time, not just scooting on his tummy.

And this week, he pulled himself to standing.

What could possibly be next?

GUS SPEAKS

August says his first words: my name, and his preference in the 2008 election.

(Mama & Poppa remain undecided.)

TRIP TO FARGO FOR JONAH'S BIRTHDAY

August and I took a trip to Fargo last weekend to help Jonah celebrate his birthday. Jonah was very happy to see his cousin.

Gus got to play with the wonder blocks at Grandma Mary's house:

And later at Jonah's house, he got to play with some of the toys from when Jonah was a baby

On Saturday, Gus got to ride with Jonah while we ran some errands,

And at Jonah's birthday party, Gus met some new people. Here he is with Jonah's Grandma Jo,

and his Aunt Toni,

and his Uncle Tom!

August liked helping with the wrapping paper while Jonah opened all of his gifts.

And he discovered a new toy - Grandma Mary's shoelaces!

August got to see a closeup of the birthday cake,

before Jonah blew out the candles.

He didn't get to share in the cake and ice cream though. Maybe next time?

Best of all, he got to help his cousin play with all of his gifts!
